Rendez-vous à La Nombreuse le 19 juin pour la sortie du livre de Lucas Castel aux Editions la CAB.
Neu- est un projet au long court documentant les mines de lignite (charbon) en Allemagne. Depuis les années 1980, la multinationale RWE exploite intensivement le lignite dans le bassin rhénan, entraînant la destruction de 16 villages et le déplacement de leurs habitants. Pour extraire ce charbon, RWE transforme le territoire : elle rase des localités, modifie les paysages, détourne les rivières, déplace les cimetières, détruit les forêts.
Les villages reconstruits plus loin sont rebaptisés avec le préfixe Neu-, symbole d’un monde artificiel façonné par RWE — aseptisé, standardisé, où les cicatrices du sol deviennent des attractions.
Ce travail photographique explore la violence de cette transformation, en ne montrant pas directement les mines, mais en s’attardant sur le désordre qu’elles génèrent.

Join us at La Nombreuse on June 19 for the launch of Lucas Castel's book, published by Editions la CAB.
Neu- is a long-term project documenting Germany's lignite (coal) mines. Since the 1980s, the multinational RWE has been intensively mining brown coal in the Rhine basin, resulting in the destruction of 16 villages and the displacement of their inhabitants. To extract this coal, RWE transforms the land: razing villages, altering landscapes, diverting rivers, moving cemeteries and destroying forests.
Villages rebuilt further afield are renamed with the prefix Neu-, symbolizing an artificial world shaped by RWE - sanitized, standardized, where the scars on the ground become attractions.
This photographic work explores the violence of this transformation, not by showing the mines directly, but by focusing on the disorder they generate.
