"Ancient Sounds of Benares", is a musical tribute to the rich and diverse traditions of Varanasi, recognized by UNESCO as a "City of Music."
The project brings to life centuries of musical heritage and invites listeners to experience the city's profound spiritual and emotional narratives through a thoughtfully selected repertoire encompassing mantra chanting, the majestic dhrupad dhamar, intricate classical ragas, dynamic tabla rhythms, expressive thumri and lively folk melodies.
Nestled on the sacred Ganges River in North India, Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a timeless centre of culture, spirituality, and art, interwoven with centuries of musical tradition. For millennia, this ancient city has been a cradle
of Indian music, nurturing generations of renowned artists and fostering a rich musical heritage. In 2015, UNESCO designated Varanasi a "City of Music," a
testament to the city's vibrant musical tradition deeply rooted in Indian philosophies and spiritual practices. "Ancient Sounds of Banaras" is more than a music project; it is a
tribute to the cultural heritage and timeless traditions of this sacred city. Through the soulful sounds of bansuri and the dynamic rhythm of the tabla, we aim to reconnect audiences with the profound spiritual and emotional narratives embedded within
the music of Varanasi. Join us on this journey, as we bring the ancient sounds of Varanasi
to life!
The concert begins with the exploration of mantras, sacred sounds and phrases that are chanted for spiritual awakening and divine connection. These ancient syllables, when woven with the soft tones of the bansuri, create a tranquil
atmosphere that transports listeners to a meditative state. These ancient and revered forms of Indian classical music have flourished in Varanasi for centuries. Dhrupad, known
for its slow tempo and intricate rhythmic patterns, is often associated with devotion and tranquility. Dhamar, another ancient form, is characterized by its rhythmic complexity
and expressive melodies.
