Pianist/composer Pat Jaffe launches his new ‘LUNSEN’ band, with four of Melbourne’s most exciting young improvisers - Thien Pham (trumpet), Zac O’Connell (alto saxophone), Claire Abougelis (bass), Marissa Di Marzio (drums). 'LUNSEN', named after the forest near the town of Uppsala in Sweden (where Pat lived in 2020), play chamber jazz that centres around the lyrical storytelling of Pat's writing.
Pat Jaffe creates music that sits somewhere at the midpoint between the jazz and classical genres. He was the recipient of the 2020 Allan Zavod Performers’ Award and has worked as an arranger/collaborator with Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote) and Academy Award winning singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová. His debut album ‘Eldorado’, was recorded in Reykjavík with the renowned Icelandic chamber ensemble, the Siggi String Quartet.
He has since released two albums with Brisbane-based label MADE NOW MUSIC – ‘A Sanctuary of Quietude’, for which he and co-composer Callum Mintzis were finalists for Best Jazz/Improvised Performance at the 2022 APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards, and ‘SUMMIT’, a duo recording with violist Aidan Filshie. Pat currently performs with the Jazzlab Orchestra, Mia Barham Quintet and Afrospace Interchange, which he co-leads in a weekly residency at Old Plates Record Bar.
“His music blends elements of jazz, modern classical, and minimalist pianism, falling somewhere between Brad Mehldau and Australian neo-classical pianist Luke Howard. There’s something in these woven melodies and their relaxed timing that calms the soul when peace is needed most”– Headphone Commute (UK)
“An impressive debut from a thoughtful and sensitive musician”– Eric Myers, The Australian
