Beyond, Below, and Above
Naarm/Melbourne-based pianist Abi Lee gathers outstanding improvisers to explore ensemble improvisation. Using the traditional aspects in compositions as a springboard for improvisation, the ensemble explores possibilities beyond, below, and above the compositions whilst cohering with full freedom in creativity and individuality. Lee’s originals combine modern jazz-influenced aspects with graphics, photos, conduction, poetry, words, and prompts for ensemble improvisation. Influenced by many great improvisers: Anthony Braxton, Kris Davis, Ornette Coleman, and ICP Orchestra, Lee’s compositions focus on the sound and its movement and reflect some of film techniques (such as jump cuts, lighting).
