Support the STEP Scholarship Fund through the Leather & Learn Scholarship Drive! Hosted by Leather Bear Abe & Daddy Gil. The STEP Scholarship Fund is designed to support LGBTQIA+ individuals currently in pursuit of a degree/program of higher learning. Unlike a traditional scholarship program, recipients are awarded funds directly in order to better assist with any cost that can be a barrier to education and through removing some of these financial barriers, this scholarship fund hopes to provide better access to education for members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Rio Grande Valley.

About our scholarship drive organizers:

Leather Bear Abe is a member of the RGV Leathermen and RGV Bears and currently holds the title of Mr. RGV Leather 2025. A born and raised Valley native, he has made it his priority to help foster and grow queer spaces in the RGV where people can feel empowered to express their truest and most authentic selves. His platform and mission for his title year is to bridge connect across the various queer groups, organizations, and communities so that we may all lean and support each other in these trying times. Having spent the early years of his career in higher education, access to education is a passion of his, understanding that eliminating barriers to education is a key component in improving access to post-secondary education.

Daddy Gil is the President of the Texas Leather Society, Guardian of the Leatherboys of Houston, and Texas Handler 2025. Originally from Chicago, he’s been a key figure in Houston’s leather, pup, and pet community for over 15 years. He actively supports causes like HIV awareness and bio-pup outreach, and champions intersectionality as a way to build inclusive, diverse spaces.
