About the event

Learn to Paddle Social: Brown Deer
If you’ve been curious about kayaking but aren’t sure where to start—or you’d just feel more comfortable learning the basics before heading out on your own—our Learn to Paddle Social is for you. It’s also a great way to meet new people and enjoy the river together in a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

We combine our signature river kayak shuttle service with a short, land-based introduction to kayaking, so you feel confident before you get on the water. We provide the kayak, gear, and a shuttle ride upstream—so all you have to do is paddle back down to your parked car at your own pace. Before launching, we’ll walk you through paddling techniques, safety tips, and how to use the gear, then head out together for a relaxed, guided paddle.

We primarily use stable sit-on-top kayaks (sit-ins also available), and the river is generally shallow, calm, and easy to navigate—making it ideal for beginners and a laid-back outing for more experienced paddlers.

Section-Specific Details
This section offers a fascinating blend of tree-lined parks, wooded stretches, and quiet backyards. It’s one of the most accessible ways to experience the Milwaukee River close to the city, with reliable water levels and regular wildlife sightings, from herons and turtles to deer. The journey starts just below the Thiensville dam and flows south toward Brown Deer, with a bathroom stop available about two-thirds of the way at Mequon’s River Barn Park. A great pick for those wanting a mellow paddle with a mix of natural beauty and neighborhood charm.
