GreenThumb community gardens are developed, led, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces.
Fred McLeod Community Garden, FKA Marcus Garvey Tenants Association Garden, is a thriving community garden in Brownsville with 30 raised beds, multiple styles of trellises for vertical growing, a greenhouse, 3-bin compost, two apple trees, and more than 10 varieties of mint. They regularly host youth groups, special needs schools, and workshops, and have received multiple City Parks Foundation grants to improve access and expand community programs.
Join GreenThumb and Fred McLeod Community Garden for a public workday to help prepare pathways, W**d, prune, paint, organize tools, and cover bare soil. Learn about urban gardening while supporting a vibrant, inclusive community space! Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. Note: Some tasks may involve lifting heavy materials and extended periods of bending, squatting, and moving.
