“We ARE Dadaism… our ability to create in these systems that are not built for us… IS Dadaism.”
— Cassandra Balbas, Co-Founder of The Tsismosas Collective
Artists are truthtellers, shaping collective consciousness, prompting deep (and often difficult) conversations, and magnifying the extraordinary minutia of life.
Padapada (Ilokano: sameness) calls forward the radical spirit of Dadaism, responding to the irony, wars, political unrest, and cultural erasure of our time. In an age where progress is promised, mental health awareness, global connectivity, innovation...why do we feel like we’re repeating historical mistakes?
We know this to be true: we are made of the same matter. Shared experiences bring us together, and our differences strengthen the bond. Yet, we are still too quick to otherize.
In Padapada: The Power of Us, The Tsismosas Collective and guest artists turn to art as advocacy...reclaiming joy, critiquing absurd current events, and igniting righteous resistance. Through bold multimedia works highlighting current events, feminine strength, and Filipino culture and artistic practices, this exhibition invites you to witness the power of us.
Founded as a sacred space by and for Filipina/BIPOC artists, The Tsismosas Collective honors the warrior spirits of our ancestors, uses art and community as tools for transformation and healing, and reclaims play and creativity as sacred acts.
Curated by: Alitha A. Alford, Cassandra Balbas, and Andrea Miralles (Founders of The Tsismosas Art Collective)
✨ Join us for one of the final gatherings at The Brooklyn Art Cave—an immersive three-day offering of art, memory, empowerment, and resistance inspired by the radical spirit of Dada, in celebration of Filipino American History Month.
