Contemporary Art Exhibit (upstairs in the Great Room)
Curated by Allison Belolan, Katherine Gressel, Caroline McAuliffe, and Jocelyn Russell of the Mother Creatrix Collective
Rooted Resistance examines the intersection of creative work, caregiving, and ecological advocacy, exploring how these responsibilities both compete for and amplify each other's urgency. The featured artists demonstrate how parenting and creative practice inform environmental consciousness and activism, revealing how familial concerns catalyze environmental action while artistic practice offers vital tools for imagining more just ecological futures.
Some artists draw inspiration from “mother trees” and other networks of mutual support found in nature as well as the concept of “kin-keeping,” nurturing connections between people, families, and the ecosystems they depend on. These practices resist individualistic, consumer-driven approaches to environmentalism, showing care as both a communal and radical act, often grounded in indigenous and diasporic ancestral traditions. Other artists critique the disproportionate burden placed on caregivers—often mothers—to shoulder environmental responsibility on top of domestic and professional demands. Some artists offer innovative ways to repurpose domestic materials, including single use baby gear. Throughout the exhibition, the over-reliance on personal action, sometimes leading to “eco-shame,” is contrasted with the urgent need for systemic policy change.
Finally, outdoor and site-responsive works, including some created with the community and activist groups like Climate Families NYC, engage directly with the Old Stone House’s parkland, drawing connections between the exhibition, the surrounding environment, and broader environmental advocacy efforts.
Rooted Resistance features the work of five members of the Mother Creatrix Collective, along with 13 additional artists or community groups representing diverse approaches to the theme.
