Contemporary Art Exhibit (upstairs in the Great Room)
On View: August 9, 2025 – October 13, 2025
Exhibition Curator: Jeremy Dennis
Nothing is Fixed reflects the tumultuous Trump presidency and the destabilization of societal norms, echoing James Baldwin’s words:
“Nothing is fixed, forever, and forever, and forever. It is not fixed. The earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does not cease to grind down rock. What you have, you hold. What you don’t have, you can’t hold.” (Nothing Personal, 1964)
Just as the natural world constantly shifts, so too can our political and social systems evolve—sometimes for the worse, but also for the better. This exhibition examines the tension between a moment of deep division and uncertainty, and with an underlying optimism that change is inevitable and can lead to growth, healing, and progress. By confronting the instability of our current moment, the work suggests that while nothing is static, the direction of change remains in our collective hands.
Permanent Exhibition
Old Stone House: Witness to War is a self-directed exhibit that takes visitors on a journey from the Lenape village of Marechkawick through Dutch colonization and the Revolutionary War era in Brooklyn. Ten themed areas allow visitors to explore this history and consider how war and displacement impacted the community, what choices people had to make at the time, battle strategies, and what makes these issues relevant in today’s world.
The contemporary art gallery is on display in our Great Room which is up 18 steps with a railing on one side.
Witness to War is on the ground floor. The doorway has a 1.5 inch threshold.
Public park bathrooms are on the South side of the building. They are on the ground floor but are not currently wheelchair accessible.
You will find many oppurtunities to sit and rest throughout the House.
The history and art on display should be considered "PG." The atmosphere is always family-friendly and visiting us is a great way for children to practice respectful museum behavior.
