Oilyversary

Much to our disbelief, 8 Oily Dykes is turning 1! Little did we know back in December 2024 what type of oily, ass-shaking, radical performance mutual aid work we’d be doing; but it has been all of our oiliest honors and privileges to grow, become more of ourselves this year, create ever-lasting community, and donate, with you all of course, almost $20k to Mutual Aid here and abroad. We really, truly couldn't do this without you and we want to celebrate!!

Us: shinier, sparklier, oilier than ever before, lips puckered, ready to revel in community, and with two stellar DJs lined up

Picture this: it’s November 2024. Dreary, orange leaves are now a distant memory, grey bleak becomes the background to even the best of news, the cold is setting in in a real way, but it’s not quite cold enough and you’re reminded of the climate catastrophe in every waking moment; Trump has just been elected president. Again. Things are deeply troubling. Collective grief is palpable.

Then, a phone call. brrrrrring brrrrrring brrrrrring!!

“Hey it’s Bunkini Bottom, ready to shake some ass???”

The call that was heard around Brooklyn. Sound the alarms!! Hope lives!! And just like that, 8 of the oiliest dykes known to Brooklyn were born and life was never the same! We ran out of our houses skipping and doing chainé turns down the block to a musical yet to be written (omg should we write a musical…)

They skipped and kept all the way to Starr Bar where they had their first raging successful show with 8 (ish performers) to light the menorah and almost $6,000 raised for the Sammet Project!

Then in April they did it again with a Passover show where they donated $3,000 to trans asylum seekers.

And, most recently, they raised the bar and donated almost $9,000 to Palestinians seeking refuge in Egypt at their Book of Dyke Show at Littlefield in September.

And now we’re here, today. Invigorated, hopeful, and ready to keep creating.
