Hi guys, this Friday, we are hosting a very special screening!
Matthew Thurber, a cartoonist and filmmaker, will present his and Mrs William Horsley band's 16mm films with live sound and narration in the tradition of benshi, the Japanese “film explainers” who accompanied silent cinema.
The program features FLEEGIX (2019) and The Sea Masons (2021), two eccentric silent films that merge science fiction and surreal comedy.
FLEEGIX follows Earthlings convinced they live on Mars, exploring belief and illusion in a world of parking lots and gas stations. The Sea Masons, a fantasy that drifts through the Anthropocene with humanoid fish, street surgeries, and vanishing paradises, soon to sink beneath rising sea waters, in the tradition of Georges Méliès.
Matthew’s comic and zine books will also be available for purchase!
