🎤 Speaker: Bette Sloane, Artist & Math Educator

This captivating lecture will explore the many roles mathematics plays in cinema—both in front of and behind the camera. Join us as we examine films where math drives the storyline, delve into biopics of famous and infamous mathematicians (sometimes fictionalized), and uncover how mathematical concepts serve as pivotal plot devices.

We'll also peek behind the scenes to discover the math involved in filmmaking techniques and analyze those cinematic moments when the math doesn’t quite add up.

Bette Sloane is an experienced high school and collegiate math educator with 18 years of teaching under her belt. She holds a BFA in Photography, an MA in Mathematics Education, and an EdM in Curriculum & Teaching from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Recognized by the US Department of Education for her interdisciplinary contributions, Bette has received multiple fellowship grants to explore the intersections of art, math, and culture.
