PRESS RELEASE:

On October 17 at 9:30 PM, psych-surf rock band Kioea from Maine is set to light up ShapeShifter Lab with their special blend of audio and visuals in an immersive live performance called "Echolocation."Guitarist Carand Burnet leads Kioea (pronounced kēōˈāə). With captivating guitar riffs and backed by the dynamic duo of Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums, this trio creates a blend of surf rock, psychedelia, and world influences. Their innovative artistry has already caught the eye of music reviewers, like J. Swartwood from Aquarium Drunkard, who praises Burnet's merging of "simultaneously modern and vintage" sounds. Twice featured as a "New & Notable" on Bandcamp, Burnet's music is described as a cinematic listening experience. Their most recent EP, Electric Surf, was released in June. The night will also showcase a film featuring over 300 stunning 35mm landscape photos captured during an epic 10,000-mile road trip. Together, the music and visuals will take listeners on a captivating journey through the connections between nature and instrumental sound. Kioea's band name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean "Stand Tall." Lead guitarist Carand Burnet adds, "Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician, and I hope this music inspires others."ShapeShifter Lab, located at 837 Union Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is a performance space that opened in 2011 and was initially located in Gowanus. The venue hosts some of the world's most innovative artists who seek a flexible platform to present their work. For more information about the show, please visit https://shapeshifterplus.org/event/kioea-echolocation/.FOR MORE INFO ON KIOEA:kioeamusic.comkioea.bandcamp.com/album/electric-surfinstagram.com/kioeamusicABOUT KIOEA |kioea.bandcamp.com)Kioea's name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean "Stand Tall." Guitarist Carand Burnet, the driving force behind the band's intricate melodies, wants to uplift listeners with her music. Burnet adds, "Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician, and I hope this album inspires others."Kioea () is a music group featuring Carand Burnet(she/her) as lead guitarist and songwriter, supported by Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Their music blends sounds of surf rock, psychedelia, and global influences. J. Swartwood (Aquarium Drunkard) described Burnet's music as "simultaneously modern and vintage."

Bandcamp recognized Kioea for their EP and album, Stand Tall, which they selected as New & Notable releases. Bandcamp's Editorial Director writes, "The debut LP from Kioea is dreamy psychedelic surf music that calls back to the '60s while feeling remarkably contemporary." Jason M. Rubin (The Arts Fuse) comments, "Burnet's surf guitar takes the listener on journeys of their own, all of which feed a desire to hear more."

Doyle Dean, host of The Dean's List on NCPR, notes that "Burnet's guitar playing owes a little bit to the sound of The Ventures, Dick Dale, and the '90s Canadian daredevils of the form, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. But her singular voice owes just as much to that of Sonny Rollins – lost in the madness of a late 1950s session for Riverside. It's that departure Kioea offers."

Kioea has performed at The Thing in the Spring Festival, Tidelands Festival, Twenty Summers, 3S Artspace, The Music Hall, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, SPACE Gallery, and other venues. Burnet performs solo and with her band, and she has had the privilege of opening for artists such as William Tyler, Jeff Parker, Cut Worms, and Lady Lamb at venues and festivals. In 2023, Burnet received a Maine ARP Grant through SPACE Gallery and the National Endowment for the Arts, which supported the making of Kioea's album Stand Tall. Their most recent EP, Electric Surf, was released in June 2025.
