About the event

Kiln Explorations: Hollow Core Casting with John Dillard
Hollow core casting is the technique with which it is possible to cast vessels or create uniquely designed interior spaces.

About this Event

Hollow core casting is the technique with which it is possible to cast vessels or create uniquely designed interior spaces. This course is an intermediate to advanced glass casting and mold making course. Students will learn the fundamentals of complex plaster silica mold construction and core forming technique. Silicone rubber molds and plaster mold making will also be comprehensively demonstrated. A basic introduction to coldworking will be given to complete the course.

What to Expect:

Lectures and demonstrations will be given weekly that build on the foundations of plaster silica glass casting techniques. This advanced technique will be conducive to students who wish to advance their skill or complete specific hollow projects. This course requires standing for periods of time longer than half an hour. Students should expect to leave this class with one to two complete glass objects. Due to the nature of the material it is not possible to cast any object with a thickness greater than 2.5".

Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities, including preparing glass pieces for firing, and loading and unloading the kiln. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: Previous experience required. This course is an intermediate to advanced glass casting and mold making course.  Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to be fused in the kiln and cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at YXJpYW5uYSB8IHVyYmFuZ2xhc3MgISBvcmc= if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
