Even in despair lies much hope.
The dark night culminates in light.
- Nizami
Join ArteEast on March 13th for ArteEast’s fourth Hikayat (meaning stories in Arabic, Armenian, Persian and Turkish)—a vibrant night of experimental and multimedia performances including storytelling, spoken word, live projections, and music.
In light of ongoing and reignited violence throughout the SWANA region, ArteEast’s upcoming Hikayat, Into the Light, is inspired by a verse from Nizami’s 12th century epic love story, Layli and Majnun. The verse urges readers to remain hopeful even in the depths of despair. Coinciding with the forthcoming vernal equinox, celebrated by many communities in the region as Nowrouz or Newroz (literally translated as New Day); the first day of spring represents rebirth, renewal and light conquering darkness. The parallels between Nizami’s verse and the sentiments behind this yearly ritual celebration reflect the spirit we hope to generate following an evening centering the SWANA community through poetry, performance, storytelling and music.
Performances by: Nooshin Rostami & Mani Nilchiani, Moshtari Hilal, Mariam Bazeed, bes, Meryem Uzumcu, Ida Momennejad and Babagaoush.
Poster design by Kucheh Art Studio.
