First Hand brings together the works of artists illustrating stories and experiences that are at risk of erasure. Using art as documentation, the works function as a historical archive capturing current global events, the dissolution of QTBIPOC memoirs, and the limitations of homogeneity versus the promise of a pluralistic society.
With authoritarian narrative-control tactics on the rise, journalistic integrity is in peril; and as power structures intensify, the public sphere becomes increasingly militarized.
How is cultural memory constructed and who is permitted to inhabit it? The exhibition probes these questions and the scope for cultural internationalism, not as an abstract ideal but as a collective practice.
