Fantasy Book Group with Ashli
Discussing Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R. F. Kuang
Led by Greenlight Events Coordinator Ashli, the Fantasy Book Group meets monthly to explore the many mystical corners of a boundless genre: cozy, romantasy, YA, contemporary, high (or epic), anthologies, and more! Whether you're a lifelong fantasy lover or a burgeoning fan, we welcome you here.
For October, the group discusses Babel, the #1 New York Times Bestseller by award-winning author R.F. Kuang (The Poppy War). A thematic response to The Secret History and a tonal retort to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Kuang's Babel grapples with student revolutions, colonial resistance, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British empire. An act of translation is always an act of betrayal; and when Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, one student must decide… Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence?
