We are in the midst of Fall migration! During this community bird outing, we will learn about bird migration and the birds that winter in Brooklyn. We will discuss some themes from Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower. In this novel Lauren Oya Olamina takes part in her own migration and Butler uses the language of “predators” and “prey” to describe the power dynamics of who and what they encounter on this journey. The predator and prey dynamic play a big role in how and when birds migrate as well. We will reflect on Butler’s work and what is applicable for our survival as humans and what lessons we can take from birds.
