Barchives 32: Archiving Arcturus

Winter’s over and Barchives is back! Set your sights toward summer with the tropical vibes of Famous Last Words (925 Fulton St., Brooklyn) and the adventurous archival collections of the Arcturus Expedition. Arcturus, which set sail in 1925, was not only notable for exploring the depths of “Neptune’s Graveyard” near the Galapagos Islands, but also for including 6 women researchers on the crew. Alyssa Daughdrill, co-author of the PBS Nature article Charting New Waters, will recount the work of these explorers on this historic expedition and their contributions to the former Department of Tropical Research of the New York Zoological Society, now the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Brett Dion, WCS’s Archivist and Digital Preservation Manager, will tell us more about the scope of collections and projects at WCS’s Archives. Don’t forget to sip a sea-themed cocktail, crafted by Chris Buckley, to fully immerse yourself in this tropical, archival, Women’s History Month affair.
