Threepenny Theater Co. is excited to announce open auditions for our upcoming fall production, Ugly Lies the Bone!
About the Play: Newly discharged soldier Jess has finally returned to her Florida hometown. She brings with her not only vivid memories of Afghanistan, but painful burns that have left her physically and emotionally scarred—and Jess soon realizes that things at home have changed even more than she has. Through the use of virtual reality video game therapy, she builds a breathtaking new world where she can escape her pain. As Jess advances farther in the game, she begins to restore her relationships, her life, and, slowly, herself.
Lindsey Ferrentino's transformative play was inspired by a real video game therapy called “Snow World,” currently being used to treat burn survivor veterans living in a state of perpetual pain.

Seeking 5-6 actors for the following roles:
JESS – late twenties to early 40s. Severely affected by third degree burns, uses a walker or other mobility device (cane, wheelchair, etc.). Quick-witted, intelligent, tough. Trying to have strength in her body, vulnerability in her life.�
KACIE – early thirties to early 40s. Jess' older sister by a few years. Though her midlife years are catching up with her body, she is still pretty. Sweet, and trying her hardest for positivity.�
STEVIE – late twenties to early 40s. An inviting smile that makes you want to live in it. Life just keeps happening to him.�KELVIN – Kacie's boyfriend. Older than Kacie. Too comfortable in his own skin.�
VOICE/THEIR MOM – 60's. Passionate, powerful, maternal. Strong vocal quality. These roles can be played by a single actor, or separately.
Playwright Lindsey Ferrentino's note: Cast can be any race, and should hopefully reflect some diversity in the world.
ALSO NEEDED: This play undergoes some quick and smooth transitions from the virtual world to reality and back again. We’re also going to attempt to create snowscapes with light and projection alone! If you’re interested in being a set designer, lighting technician, stage manager, or stage hand, please show up at auditions or reach out directly! We’d love to hear from you!
