TALK: When Lincoln County Froze: Its History of Ice Harvesting

Please join us on October 19th as South Bristol historian Dave Andrews shares the fascinating story of how Lincoln County established itself as a major center for ice production throughout the 19th century.

Located in coastal towns, ice companies, like the Knickerbocker Ice Company, cut and stored huge quantities of ice for export to cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. At its peak, the Lincoln County Ice houses could hold more than 125,000 tons of ice.

Dave Andrews is a founding member of the South Bristol Historical
Society. While he has researched and spoken about many aspects of South Bristol history, his main focus has been on 18th and 19th century commercial activities. He recently completed an in-depth study of South Bristol’s 17th century history. Andrews lives with his wife, Betsy, in an 1880’s Second Empire Mansard house originally belonging to the owner of the Damariscotta River Steamboat Company.
