Friday 1 August 2025, 9am - 1pm
In this session, you will have the opportunity to create your own narratives and turn them into your very own pop-up book! We will begin with idea-generating activities to spark creativity when developing a character and setting for your story. These will form the starting point for weaving your own narrative and deciding the journey your character will take. We will take inspiration from the exhibition Soft Power, Lives told through textile art, exploring how to tell a story through imagery and elements of 3D design.
Elena will guide you through the process of translating your story not only into an illustrated book, but into a pop-up illustrated book, where the pages come alive as you turn them. You will learn several pop-up techniques that can be used in other projects, and we will work with materials that you are likely to have at home, allowing you to continue developing this skill after the session ends.
Led by multimedia artist Elena Hayward, who holds a BA (Hons) in Illustration. Her artwork is playful and energetic, with a focus on character, colour, and nature. She has facilitated workshops for over four years, working with adults, children, teenagers, and vulnerable people. Elena has worked with the RWA, facilitating workshops and an exhibition with Dhek Bhal and Refugee Women of Bristol, as well as leading Scribble & Sketch workshops and an Abstract Painting workshop for 7–11-year-olds.
