In honour of Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, join us at the Cube to revisit a key influence on the French New Wave.
Inspired by Dostoyevsky and Samuel Fuller, Bresson furthered refined his unique working method with Pickpocket, a tale of crime and compulsion in Paris. Michel (Martin La Salle) is an unemployed man who thinks the life of a regular person is beneath him, which leads him to try his luck living off pickpocketing. His friend Jeanne (Marika Green) tries to help him but as the number of his crimes increase, it becomes increasingly ambiguous whether his stealing is due to necessity or stemming from some mysterious purpose known only to him...
A minimalist thriller as well as love story in disguise, Pickpocket is one of the best loved and most influential films in the history of French cinema, and essential viewing for anyone.
