MORE INFO
A workshop with artist and ecologist Richard Layzell exploring new ways to relate to, and value, the trees and wild plants of Knowle West (and Bristol).
He’ll share his recent visit to the Petrified Forest of Lesvos in Greece, where there are still-standing trees 20 million years old.
Also his Last Leaves project from the winter of 2024, when he filmed the few remaining leaves on different species of deciduous trees throughout the winter, as a reminder that trees are never still.
And in Knowle West, many place names reference trees, like Oakley, Nine Elms, Gospel Oak, Beechwood, Honor Oak, Elmstead, Maplestead, Elmbridge, Birchington, Burnham Beeches, Elmswell, Mapledurham and Sevenoaks. Knowle West is in such a unique location, combining open country and the city, farmland not so long ago.
We will listen to recordings of Knowle West’s dawn chorus, visit local trees and landscapes, and explore how photography can help us find the unexpected and even become a research tool. And what is a W**d?
