Join us on Friday 30th May for the first evening pop up of the summer at the Ardagh. We will be opening weekly Fridays during the summer presenting an array of in-house and guest street food pop ups. Bring on the long summer evenings!
Returning for our opening day, following a sellout success with us in 2024, are Bristol’s Jamaican street food supremos Jerk King.
Established in 2014, Jerk King found its wings in no time, catering at St Paul'sl and The Ship Inn where demand was phenomenal. When it comes to jerk chicken, Jerk King stands shoulders above the competition, we say it’s Bristol’s best and so do their customers. Run by the ever smiley Ash Burrowes, and inspired by his father and grandmother who taught him to cook and run the business. His father, apart from being an Olympic weightlifter in his younger days, had Jamaican restaurants on Stokes Croft and Union St, in the late ’80s, called Quisine. A family with many years experience catering for the good people of Bristol.
Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica. The meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican Jerk Spice. Seasoning principally relies upon two items: allspice (called “pimento” in Jamaica) and Scotch bonnet peppers.
The cooking technique of jerking, as well as the results it produces, has evolved over time from using pit fires to old oil barrel halves as the container of choice. Jerk is also derived from the action of jerking, which referred to poking meat with holes so that flavour could more easily be absorbed.
Jerk King will be bring dishes suitable for the whole family, the cafe will be running a bar, there will also be music and activities for kids and young of heart adults alike.
