Explore the rich tradition of Mexican tin art, also known as hojalata, in this beginner-friendly workshop. For centuries, Mexican artisans have transformed everyday tin into vibrant, embossed artwork full of colour and texture. In this workshop we will be making Christmas decorations (such as trees, snowmen and angels) that can hung on your tree or given as gifts.
During the class, you will:
Because we guide you step by step, you feel supported as you learn and have plenty of time to explore your own creative ideas.
You start by practising on test pieces, so you understand how to cut and emboss safely. Afterwards, you move on to your main design. Finally, you finish the class with a unique artwork ready to display, gift, or use as inspiration for future projects. You can find out more about the origins of Mexican tin art here in this blog by XO-CU.
We provide all the materials, including recycled cans, paints and brushes. Therefore, you only need to bring your creativity and a willingness to experiment. In addition, you leave with a printed handout so you can keep exploring the craft at home.
This workshop is more than just a craft class. It gives you the chance to connect with Mexican culture, try a traditional art form in a modern way, and enjoy the mindful process of making something with your hands. By the end, you take home not only your finished framed piece but also the confidence to keep experimenting with this exciting craft.
