Christmas Marbling Workshop Brighton – Suminagashi & Ebru

Join us for a special Christmas themed and beginner-friendly introduction to paper marbling. You will learn two traditional techniques: Suminagashi, the flowing Japanese style, and Ebru, the colourful Turkish form of marbling. Both traditions create bold, beautiful patterns, and you will explore how they differ.

First, you will watch how ink and paint float across water. Then you will learn how to guide the colours into swirling shapes and transfer them onto paper. Every print comes out differently, so you will leave with a collection of unique designs made by your own hands. The finished papers can be used to wrap presents or to cover items such as notebooks to give a special handmade touch to a Christmas present.

Suminagashi creates delicate, rippling lines with just ink and water. Ebru builds up striking layers of colour that you can swirl, comb, or shape into patterns. By trying both, you will discover which style you enjoy most. You will also see how the two approaches complement each other.

This class is easy to follow and very supportive. You don’t need any experience, and all materials are provided. Step by step, you will practice simple techniques and gain the confidence to keep experimenting. At the end, you will take home papers ready for framing, journaling, or gift projects.

Marbling is more than an art form—it is also calming and mindful. As you watch colours drift and swirl across water, stress fades and focus grows. Many people find it relaxing, and it often sparks fresh creative ideas.

All workshops are beginner-friendly unless stated otherwise, and we provide all the materials you need. Adult sessions are for ages 16+, teen classes for ages 11–16, and family workshops for ages 7+ with an accompanying adult. Everything you create is yours to take home.
