The Reel Thing Film Discussion Club

If you love movies and love talking about them, then you’re invited to join Cumberland County Library’s film discussion club, The Reel Thing, for an afternoon film followed by a thought-provoking discussion. The club will meet one Saturday every month, and club members take turns picking the films we’ll watch and discuss at upcoming meetings. Our next meeting is on July 26 at 1pm.

The 1956 film classic being shown this month was directed by John Ford and is considered one of the greatest Westerns ever made. In the film, an American Civil War veteran (John Wayne) embarks on a years-long journey to rescue his niece (Natalie Wood) from the Comanches after the rest of his brother's family is massacred in a raid on their Texas farm. The film delves into racism and revenge and offers a nuanced, thought-provoking experience that influenced directors like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, showcasing its enduring legacy in cinema.
