Celebrate the season with a relaxed 5-mile walk on Mynydd Illtyd’s moorland, exploring ancient sites and enjoying superb views—followed by a warming Christmas lunch at the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre café.
oin me for a 5-mile circular guided walk starting and ending at the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre near Libanus. This is a special seasonal walk designed to bring all my walkers together—whether you usually enjoy long-distance routes or shorter rambles—for a festive outing that ends with a hot lunch in the Visitor Centre café (included in your ticket).
Our route explores the atmospheric Mynydd Illtyd, a moor rich in history, legend, and views. According to folklore, this is where St Illtyd was martyred and buried. A chapel once stood on the site, built atop an ancient earthwork dating back to late prehistoric times. Though the chapel is now gone, we’ll visit the place where it once stood and imagine the centuries of footsteps that have passed before us.
We’ll then stop at a standing stone thought to be around 5,000 years old. It is believed to have acted as a Bronze Age calendar: on the winter solstice, the rising sun aligns perfectly between the twin peaks of Pen y Fan and Corn Du when viewed from this very spot.
Our path continues across the open moor to the Trig point, where traces of an Iron Age hillfort remain—defensive ditches and the gateway of a Celtic village dating back some 2,000 years. The grassy paths make for easy walking, though the ground may be wet in winter, so boots are recommended.
After the walk, we’ll return to the Visitor Centre to warm up with a hot lunch, the perfect way to end a festive walk together.
This is a walk for everyone—gentle in pace, rich in history, and filled with midwinter atmosphere. A chance to celebrate community, walking, and the turning of the year.
