Our UNICORNICOPIA! Series Finale! An immersive cinematic experience featuring an ambient soundtrack by NEONACH! Our series finale is modeled on Alice in Wonderland and structured with the logic of dreams, Louis Malle's BLACK MOON (1975) is a surreal tale of awakening sexuality set in a postapocalyptic world of shifting identities.
βEach time something appeared that looked like a plotline, I would cross it out,β -Director Louis Malle.
Structured like the logic of dreams and modeled on Alice in Wonderland, BLACK MOON (1975, 100 mins) is one of Louis Malleβs most experimental films, a trip down the rabbit hole following an anarchic set of events and opaque metaphors that both defy and demand critical scrutiny. After skirting the horrors of a mysterious war between genders being waged in the countryside, beautiful young Lily (Cathryn Harrison) takes refuge in a remote farmhouse, where she becomes embroiled in the surreal domestic life of an extremely unconventional family. Evocatively shot by cinematographer Sven Nykvist (the director of photography on many Ingmar Bergman films), Black Moon is a Freudian tale of adolescent sexuality set in a postapocalyptic world of shifting identities, elusive motivations and talking animals.
Referencing the classic surrealist films that dig deep into psychoanalysis, the symbolism of the βblack moon,β is an astrological hieroglyph connected with the unicorn and female sexuality: The setting of the film is the ultimate civil war . . the war between men and women . . . the climax and great moment of womenβs liberation. Joyce BuΓ±uel (surrealist filmmakerβs Luis BuΓ±uel's daughter-in-law), was a writer on Black Moon, and a shot of ants crawling over a piece of cheese is surely meant to evoke the iconic shot of ants in a manβs hand in BuΓ±uel and Daliβs 1928 avant-garde film: Un chien andalou.
Live Soundtrack Performance by Neonach, A solo project by Craig Douglas, a songwriter, producer and improviser from Western Massachusetts. In 2019 he released two albums of structured music that crossed various genres of music exploring black metal, ambient, prog, and pop rock. For live performances he uses the moniker to create tranced out, improvised, ambient soundscapes. Psychedelic droning vocal layers, electronic textures, classical guitar noodlings swell and swirl during live sets eventually leading to screaming sonic tiers.
