Born from community resilience after the murders of 5-year-old Damon Gist and 21-year-old Darnell Evans in a barber shop, the Academy for Peace is a shared space for workshops, art exhibits and community events in the heart of downtown Wilmington. In partnership with Stop the Violence Coalition, featured activities include an annual March for Peace down Market Street, Peace Week Delaware, and a Thanksgiving community dinner. Join us on Valentine’s Day for the kickoff of our brand new Kindness Clinic!

Piloted in California in the 1970s, Community Emergency Response Teams form at the intersection of community and emergency management. CERT teams train in all emergency management protocol so that they can effectively help their families, neighborhoods and communities in the event of a crisis. CERT in Wilmington is actively looking for volunteers. The greatest local threat is flooding, so that is the focus of this group.

Tying it all together, there will be an advertising campaign on WSTW the week leading up to the event. The general public will be able to find Valentine’s Day pizza boxes (full of candy, not pizza), at local business across the city. The goal is an inclusive celebration of Wilmington in all its neighborhoods on a day dedicated to love.
