CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound, 2025 AGM, Let’s Talk: First Responders

Join us for our annual general meeting where we will be focusing on the important topic of first responders. This in-person event will be held at Muskoka Lumber Community Centre-56 Salmon Ave. Let's come together to discuss mental health in the first responder community and how we can support those who support us. Don't miss out on this opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and learn from experts in the field.

We’re encouraging attendees to bring a non-perishable food donation as entry to the event.

"Resilience in Recovery: Navigating Mental Health Through Lived Experience"


Join retired police officer and Canadian Armed Forces veteran John Stapleford as he shares his powerful story of service, struggle, and healing. After being diagnosed with Operational Stress Injury in 2013, John began his journey through mental health challenges, navigating stigma and recovery.


In this workshop, John offers real-world insight into trauma, resilience, and the importance of support. His honest, heartfelt approach encourages attendees to break the silence, embrace vulnerability, and support one another in healing.


Ideal for caregivers, first responders, and anyone impacted by mental health, this session is a reminder that recovery is possible—and no one has to face it alone.

Workshop 2: Boots on the Ground

"Peer Support for First Responders, by First Responders"


Boots on the Ground is a volunteer-run organization that provides 24/7 anonymous peer support to first responders across Ontario. Their team is made up of active and retired police officers, firefighters, paramedics, correctional officers, and emergency dispatchers—people who truly understand the unique challenges of the job.


In this workshop, representatives from Boots on the Ground will share how peer support can be a powerful tool in mental health recovery, reduce isolation, and build resilience in high-stress professions. Attendees will learn about their services, the value of lived experience, and how to access support when it's needed most.


This session is ideal for first responders, caregivers, and anyone looking to better understand the mental health needs of those on the front lines.

Workshop 3: Wounded Warriors

"Innovative Mental Health Support for Veterans, First Responders & Their Families"


Wounded Warriors Canada is a national mental health service provider offering trauma-informed programs for Veterans, First Responders, and their families. Their work focuses on supporting those affected by operational stress injuries through clinical services, peer support, and family-focused care.


In this workshop, representatives from Wounded Warriors will highlight their mental health programs, discuss the impact of trauma, and share how their services promote healing and resilience. Attendees will learn how the organization is changing the conversation around mental health and providing meaningful, accessible support to those who serve and sacrifice.


This session is ideal for service members, frontline workers, and family members seeking pathways to recovery and connection.

"Leadership, Service, and the Human Side of Crisis"


Matt Pegg is the former Fire Chief of Toronto Fire Services and served as the City of Toronto’s Emergency Management Lead during the COVID-19 pandemic. With decades of experience in frontline emergency response and crisis leadership, Matt brings a powerful and personal perspective on what it means to lead with compassion under pressure.


In his keynote address, Matt will reflect on his experiences managing large-scale emergencies, the mental health toll that comes with high-stakes leadership, and the importance of resilience, teamwork, and vulnerability. He will also share insights on supporting mental wellness in high-stress roles and how creating a culture of care and connection can transform workplaces and communities.


Matt’s message is inspiring, authentic, and deeply rooted in his belief that behind every uniform is a human being deserving of support.
