Workshop Overview

Join Ty Hash of Mountain Ash Natural Building and Robyn Till, Tinwork's September artist-in-residence, for an overview of natural building systems, such as straw bale construction, cob building, light straw clay, and hempcrete.

This 1-hour free presentation will be followed by a 3 hour hands-on workshop, registration required, on clay-based plastering. Participants will collaboratively build a straw bale bench installed at Tinworks. We will mix clay plaster by hand (and foot) that is then applied to the surface of the bench, including low-relief design work. Bring clothes that can get dirty!

Artist Info

Ty Hash brings to the company a wealth of management and project management experience from 12 years as an Army Officer. He has a range of natural building experience from extensive self-education and experimentation, workshops, and full home building using natural building methods. Ty holds certifications in Permaculture Design and Project Management. Ty is a dad of two boys who love to play in the mud!

Robyn Till is originally from the Flathead Valley, and has been based in Bozeman for the past 12 years. After finishing her BFA in Ceramics at Montana State University, she went on to complete a Post-Baccalaureate program in Artisanry with UMASS-Dartmouth. Both her utilitarian and sculptural bodies of work are a vehicle to investigate surface design, passage of time, and the intimacy of clay. Her visual lexicon draws from historical textiles and patterns seen in the natural world. She currently splits her time between making/teaching ceramics and working at the Public Library, whose mission is central to her way of thinking and existing.

Registration

Many people are interested in registering! We ask that you please only register if you are committed to attending in respect to our instructors' valued time and efforts, as well as other workshop participants. You must be registered to attend this workshop and we limit one registration per person. If you would like to attend this workshop with a friend they must also register separately for this same event. Registration will open one month before a workshop runs.

If registration fills, a "Waiting List" option will become available and you can select this to be added to a que. We will contact these individuals as spots become available.

If you are unable to attend your workshop please contact YW5nZWxhICEgeW9ua2UgfCB0aW53b3Jrc2FydCAhIG9yZw== within 48 hours of the workshop to ensure we are able to pass your ticket to someone on the waiting list in a timely manner. Tinworks understands that unforeseen circumstances may arise, but we ask that you contact us as soon as possible if you know you are unable to attend. We do not allow your registration spot to be passed along to someone of your own choosing due to the popularity of these events and in fairness to folks who have signed up for the waiting list.

If costs are an impediment to your participation please contact the email above. We offer needs-based sponsorship of attendance. Please reach out with any questions.

We recommend arriving with plenty of time to the Tinworks Art site. Parking is available on site. All workshops will be located in either the Family & Community Space or Artist Residency Space. Any recommended materials to bring or workshop attire will be outlined in a followup reminder email.
