About Pyro:

How can snakes with such eye-popping colors be so maddeningly difficult to find? Despite their hues, Lampropeltis pyromelana snakes, lovingly known as pyros, are masters of secrecy. Embark on an exhilarating, swashbuckling journey with herpetologist Dallin Kohler in his attempt to locate these elusive snakes. From picturesque sandstone canyons to an unexpected stop at a local casino, Kohler encounters a delightful array of creatures. With its blend of exciting escapades, insightful natural history, and humor, Pyro promises not only to ignite a newfound appreciation for the seasoned herpetology enthusiast but to also warm the hearts of those curious about cold-blooded reptiles.

Dallin Kohler is a writer and herpetologist from Boise, Idaho. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biodiversity and Conservation from BYU. He is currently chasing amphibians as a graduate student in China. When he’s not unraveling the mysteries of nature’s most captivating creatures, he finds joy in following the NBA, playing classical piano, and appreciating a cleverly crafted pun.

Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and writer. She received a PhD from Montana State University where she studied religion, history and the philosophy of science. Her dissertation focused on Mormon history and the roots of armed public land conflicts occurring in the United States. She is fascinated at how religious views shape relationships to landscape. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, New York Daily News, and the History News Network. She is the author of American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Public Lands in the West and True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America. Betsy lives in Montana with her husband, writer David Quammen, three giant dogs, a sturdy cat, and a lanky rescue python.

David Quammen is an American author and journalist whose eighteen books include The Song of the Dodo (1996), Spillover (2012), The Tangled Tree (2018), and Breathless (2022), which was a finalist for the National Book Award in Nonfiction. His most recent book is The Heartbeat of the Wild: Dispatches from Landscapes of Wonder, Peril, and Hope, drawn from his twenty years writing about wild creatures and wild places on assignments for National Geographic Magazine. Quammen’s shorter work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, and The New York Review of Books, among other magazines, and his Op Eds in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other newspapers.
