Our Kids, Our Community: Navigating Technology and Mental Health In Our Schools

Watauga County Schools and the Watauga Education Foundation will host a community event on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at Watauga High School & Innovation Academy.
Keynote speaker will be local pediatrician Dr. Scott St. Clair who will share research about the impacts of technology and social media on youth and adult mental health. Dr. St. Clair will also share what he has seen in his field of work and pull some of his discussion from the book “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness” (2024) by Jonathan Haidt.

Superintendent Dr. Leslie Alexander will speak about the recent state legislation regarding cell phones in schools and how WCS may respond moving forward.

Before and after the presentations in the auditorium there will be representatives from The Children's Council, AppHealthCare's Community Health Team and Youth Villages at tables to answer questions, provide resources, etc. to families regarding youth mental health and technology use.

All in the Watauga community are invited and encouraged to attend this event that will inform the audience on key issues.
