Message Series: The Twelve
To walk in faith, we need examples. We need to see and read about people who struggled, learned, and grew to trust in Jesus over the course of time. I’ve grown from reading about the faith of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Wesley, St. Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther King Jr, and my grandparents. The written testimonies of these people have been guides to my own walk with Jesus.
One of the great gifts of the scriptures are the stories of the twelve disciples who followed Jesus because in these stories we read about normal, approachable men who developed an exceptional faith in Jesus. As we read about their doubts, the obstacles they overcame, and their enthusiasm for Jesus, we can see ourselves in their stories of transformation. As we study the faith of the twelve, we receive an example for how we can walk in our faith.
We also see through these twelve men the importance community plays in our own individual development as disciples of Jesus. We see that the first thing Jesus did in his public ministry was to begin a life group. It was the challenges, forgiveness, service, and learning these men shared that shaped them. The honesty of their stories offers us an example of how we can grow in our faith through participation in life groups.
In the month of September, we will begin a message series entitled, “The Twelve.” This six-week series profiles the twelve disciples who followed Jesus. Looking at Peter, Matthew, John, Thomas, Judas, and the Twelve as a whole, this series will remind us what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, encouraging our community to persevere in our faith.
