Join us for a warm welcome to Tree of Life Farm! We'll provide an overview of our mission and vision in the world of permaculture and introduce the team who will be guiding your learning experience today.
9:15 AM - 9:45 AM: Introduction to Permaculture
Discover the fundamentals of permaculture. We'll explore its core ethics – Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share – and delve into the key design principles that underpin this sustainable approach. Understand why permaculture offers vital solutions for a resilient future.
9:45 AM - 11:45 AM: Mapping and Design
Learn how to analyze a landscape through the lens of permaculture zones (0-5). We'll discuss strategies for designing interconnected and closed-loop systems to maximize efficiency and sustainability on your property. Participate in a hands-on exercise, potentially applying these concepts to the unique environment of Tree of Life Farm.
Midday Break (11:45 AM - 1:00 PM)
11:45 AM - 1:00 PM: Picnic Lunch
Please bring a packed lunch for yourself to enjoy amidst the serene beauty of the Tree of Life Farm. Light refreshments will be provided.
Afternoon Session (1:00 PM - 4:45 PM)
1:00 PM - 1:45 PM: Feed the Soil, Not the Plants
Uncover the secrets to building healthy, thriving soil – the foundation of any successful garden. We'll discuss natural soil amendments and practical techniques to improve soil structure and fertility, addressing common challenges. You might even get to see our soil-building practices in action here at Tree of Life Farm.
1:45 PM - 2:30 PM: Hold onto that Rain
Explore effective and natural methods for water harvesting and drought-proofing your land. We'll cover various techniques that work in harmony with the natural contours of the property to capture and utilize precious rainwater. Keep an eye out for examples implemented around Tree of Life Farm!
2:30 PM - 3:00 PM: Fruit Tree Guild Design
Learn how to create mutually beneficial plant communities around your fruit and nut trees. We'll discuss selecting the right companion plants and their optimal placement to enhance tree health, attract pollinators, and even deter pests. We may also examine existing fruit tree guilds on the farm.
3:00 PM - 3:15 PM: Intermission
Take a short break to stretch your legs, grab a refreshing drink, and chat with other participants.
3:15 PM - 4:00 PM: Food Forest Design
Expand your understanding of plant communities by learning how to design a multi-layered food forest. Discover how to integrate a variety of edible plants, from trees to groundcovers, creating a resilient and productive ecosystem inspired by natural forests. See if you can spot elements of a food forest here at Tree of Life Farm!
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM: Propagation of Fruit and Nut Trees
Discover cost-effective ways to expand your orchard and nut grove without breaking the bank. We'll discuss and potentially demonstrate various propagation techniques, giving you the knowledge to increase your own tree stock. We might even share some of the methods we use here at the farm.
4:45 PM - 5:00 PM: Wrap-up and Resources
Join us for a final Q&A session to address any lingering questions. We'll also share valuable resources to support your ongoing journey in permaculture and sustainable gardening.
