School Can’t (‘refusal’ and school anxiety) is incredibly distressing for everyone, this workshop aims to give an understanding of School Can’t, ways to support the child, and their parent/caregiver, and ways to communicate and work with the school.
The session covers -
- understanding the ‘why’ of school can’t
- the neuroscience of school can’t, what’s happening in the brain
- the body’s nervous system and how it’s reacting and driving behaviour
- Neurodiversity and school can’t
- Neurodiversity, trauma experiences and school can’t
- transitions, why they can be so difficult and ways to support through
- Identifying patterns of behaviour, the unhelpful ones, and how to interrupt those patterns
- strategies, tools and ways to collaborate with the child to support them through school can’t
This workshop incorporates the CPS model from Dr Ross Greene, Karen Young’s Neurodevelopmental Theory to Practice training, Dr Jonathon Baylin’s training on the Amygdala (training attended in person).

The facilitator -
Kate Foster, has a Bachelor of Social Science (Children & Family Studies/Psychology), and is passionate about supporting children and families.
She has worked as a Family Counsellor for the last 13 years, and has over 30 years experience working in early childhood organisations; supporting children and families.
