Join us for a short run at the Bears' Den overlook, followed by dinner, beer, socializing, & great views at the nearby Bear Chase Brewery! Also note, we're experimenting with Tuesdays, so this run is on TUESDAY, May 6.
While there are Strava segments to chase if you like, this will be a mostly casual run. The trail is rocky and slow, and it's hard to get in many miles in an hour or so (especially if we fool around with group photos at the overlook!). If you want to get >5 miles, we suggest that you start early.
Start: Snicker's Gap parking lot on Route 7 (top of the Blue Ridge)
When: May 6 at 6:30 PM
Strava route:
https://www.strava.com/routes/2870670474876804700
Route: From the parking lot, follow the Appalachian Trail (white blaze) south 0.7 miles to the Bears' Den overlook. Group photos and some cavorting will take place here. Then we'll continue (in small groups according to pace) with an out & back on the AT for as long as people want, but aiming to be back at the parking lot ~ 7:30.
Suggested turn-arounds: Bears Den Overlook (~ 0.6 mi in), 1st stream crossing (~1.1 mi in), 2nd stream crossing (2.3 miles from the start), or 3rd stream crossing (3.4 miles from the start).
Segments: To get in a work out, push the steep segments. The parking lot to Bears' Den is a Strava segment (0.58 miles), as are several steep places beyond Bears' Den (both going up & down). The next most obvious is the stretch from Bear's Den overlook down to the first stream crossing (0.47 miles at 17% grade) or vice versa for the uphill version. Additional segments are found further south. If interested in bagging one or more, check out the route in Strava’s Segment Explorer.
