Beledi Basics w Lecture

What we see in Egyptian Raqs Beledi (beledi meaning “country” in Arabic) feeds into Egyptian Raqs Sharqi (sharqi meaning “oriental” in Arabic).
Egyptian Raqs Sharqi can be seen in performances such as those of Badia Masabni in the early 20th century.
The two stylizations cannot exist without the other, as the folkloric roots are essential for accurate portrayal.

"Dance of Upper Egypt" Raqs al Assaya w Lecture

Raqs al Assaya (“dance of the cane/stick” in Arabic), is an Egyptian folkloric dance that originated from the popular stick game, which is still played in some parts of Egypt, such as the Delta region, Western cities, and Upper Egypt, under the name of “Tahtib” folk game.
This workshop is a lecture and movement combination, and we will go over history, music, specific movements and technique, and so much more.

A stick (not a cane) will be needed for this workshop.
Emily Marie will have some Assaya to barrow if needed there will be limited amount.
Feel free to bring a notebook to take notes for any lecture portions.
Handouts of lecture materials will be provided.

Egyptian food available for purchase.
You can eat there and enjoy the music or take it to go.

Costume vending and Swap - all day welcome to everyone


Need a costume? Need a new hip scarf?
Come and shop many local dancers will be selling gently used costumes and or new costumes that never fit or they never wore.

BRING cash - also many venders will take other payments as well.
GET ready to shop.

YOU do not have to take the workshop to come and enjoy the shopping, food and music.

1 - 6pm the shopping will be open at studio Z.
