The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will break out like shining from shook foil. It will spread like the ooze of oil crushed. Why do men then do not reck His rod?
The opening lines of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem ask a question that all of us are challenged to answer. God loved all creation into being, and God’s love is revealed in the created world. We can encounter the mystery and majesty of God, demonstrated in the intricacy and perfect balance of the created world. So why, then, don’t we pay attention; why are we not surprised and enriched by all of creation? Reflecting on this may reveal some surprising and unique insights for each of us and may reshape how we encounter God each day.
