Hi everyone, we are holding this bingo tea to raise funds for Travis.
A little back story on Travis first. He is a lovely 10 year old, with an Autism diagnosis, an Intellectual Disability and traits of OCD. Travis is nonverbal, not fully toilet trained, and he has no sense of danger. He tries to escape his surroundings through any means necessary, doors, windows, climbing fences etc, with no real understanding of dangers such as water or traffic. He has self injury behaviours, when he becomes overwhelmed, he will headbutt any hard surface, he bites and the violence can then move onto his family whilst they try to keep him safe and calm him down.
Travis has sensory processing problems, he can be over sensitive to certain stimuli or under sensitive.
He also sleeps on average 3 hours a night. He wakes up regularly and because of the self injury behaviours his mum will get up with him to keep him safe. He can't fall back asleep or self sooth. So he becomes distressed. Furniture and light fittings have had to be removed from his room for his safety.
The fundraiser is to get Travis a safe space enclosure. This will benefit his sleep, safety and wellbeing. It will allow him to act out his meltdowns without risk of danger to himself and others. It is sensory friendly so no harm can come to him.
This will give the family peace of mind that even if he wakes through the night, he is in a safe, nurturing environment.
The Safespace is very expensive as they are tailor made to fit a child like Travis' complex needs. His mum has tried every avenue possible, grants, charities etc. But due to strict rules in Scotland has found it very difficult to find a single bit of help toward this.
She asked family to help which was hard for her as she has always done everything herself for Travis and fought for him to get his basic human rights met. The family have come together to help with fundraising, we have an active go fund me page running, we are planning the bingo tea and will also be doing the pop up charity shop on Leslie street.
