Meet Jonathan Rowe – Photographer, Educator, and Advocate for Historical Processes
Originally from Belfast and now based in Blackpool, Jonathan Rowe is an experienced photography educator with a deep-rooted passion for analogue image-making. His journey into photography followed a formative early career in the industrial heartlands of East Lancashire—an experience that continues to shape his creative outlook.
After honing his craft at Blackpool and The Fylde College, Jonathan transitioned into teaching, where he brings both technical knowledge and a thoughtful, socially engaged perspective to his work. His practice often explores themes of identity, place, and post-industrial change, reflecting the landscapes and communities he knows so well.
Jonathan has a particular fascination with early photographic techniques, especially the wet plate collodion process. He’s drawn to the tactile, hands-on nature of this 19th-century method and its capacity to reveal the physical and historical depth of the photographic image.
In his workshops, Jonathan shares not only the "how" of wet plate photography but also the "why"—inviting participants to slow down, engage deeply with their materials, and rediscover the magic of creating images by hand. Whether you're new to alternative processes or looking to expand your analogue practice, Jonathan offers a welcoming, insightful introduction to this timeless art form.
