An exhibition of large and small scale paintings and objects by Hannah Appleyard and Stuart Short.
The opening event will be on Saturday 31st May from 3-5pm and the exhibition will run until 28th June with access during The Bureau's opening hours.
The artists will be running a workshop alongside the exhibition- date and content TBC.
The artist Hannah Appleyard also works under the name "ATU art", signing all works as 'Han Atu Art'.
"ATU" comes from ancient Chinese, meaning 'of the spirit', and is also hip-hop acronym meaning Abstract Tribal Unique. Full of colour and life and magick, Hannah's paintings have been sold to North America and Europe, as well as all over the UK.
Nature, and the natural world, has always been the inspiration for her pieces. Hannah is particularly interested in fractals, and the similarities between the microcosm and the macrocosm.
Hannah finally arrived at making art with paint after a roundabout journey involving music, clairvoyance, and photography. Paintings are always dated and signed on the reverse so that buyers can hang them however they wish. All paintings are untitled as she does not want to suggest what to see in them and prefers to let your imagination run free.
Hannah has exhibited paintings in various locations in Cumbria and Scotland in the past, in both solo exhibitions and joint exhibitions with Stuart Short.
Stuart Short studied at Maidstone College of Art and after graduating worked at several design agencies until in 2005 he left employment to paint full time. Until 2018 this mainly consisted of commissioned portrait painting but the Covid era allowed Stuart to explore his own perceptions of light, colour and geometry through paint. Stuart now lives and works from his home studio at Lowther in The Lake District. He uses a method of painting whereby semi transparent layers of glazes are built up to achieve an overall hue, luminescence and depth to the painting.
Stuart's interests also encompass neolithic and bronze age art and symbolism which inspire his sculpture and three dimensional work.
