In 2025, the TransAlta commercial coal-fired power plant in Centralia will cease operations, marking the end of general mining and power generation for coal-related activities across the entire state.
From Dr. William Fraser Tolmie's discovery of coal along the Cowlitz River in 1833 to the closure of the last commercial coal-fired plant, this event serves as a powerful bookend to a 192-year saga. This presentation will delve into the profound impact of coal on Washington's development and what this significant closure means for its future.
