🎨 You are invited to the opening of Going Back Brockens.
🛠️ 40 years on from the end of the miners’ strike, award-winning artist Narbi Price and acclaimed writer Mark Hudson have joined forces to create a major new exhibition exploring the changing landscapes and communities of County Durham’s post-industrial towns.
🗓️ Opening night: Friday 13 June, 5pm – 9pm
📍 The Warehouse, Newgate Centre, Bishop Auckland
💥 FREE to attend – all welcome!
🖼️ GOING BACK BROCKENS: Monuments and Rhetoric After the Miners’ Strike is a three-part exhibition pairing Narbi Price’s 40 new paintings with a powerful sound installation by Mark Hudson. It explores not only what was lost after the strike, but also what remains – how landscapes hold memory, and how communities continue to shape their sense of place.
🏛️ The Warehouse is a new grassroots arts space developed by the MINE Collective using vacant units in Bishop Auckland’s Newgate Shopping Centre.
🕰️ Exhibition open:
➡️ Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays | 12pm – 3pm
➡️ From Saturday 14 June to Saturday 5 July
🎥 Also showing:
‘Where We Belong’, a new series of six short films by Carl Joyce, exploring the relationship between people and place in County Durham – inspired by Hudson’s 1994 book Coming Back Brockens.
🧭 Parts 2 & 3 of the exhibition:
📅 Saturday 12 July | Durham Miners’ Gala
📍 Paintings + immersive sound installation on the field, part of the historic 139th gathering in Durham City
📅 Friday 22 August | Horden 125th Anniversary
📍 Full exhibition in the village + soundscape installed in historic St Mary’s Church (‘The Miners’ Cathedral’)
🧶 Includes community work from the Horden Hooked on Craft group
🎞️ Carl Joyce’s films will also be featured at both events.
