About the event

Teaching Electromagnetism Practically
Network with colleagues and share best practise around teaching electromagnetism practically in lessons.

About this Event

The Birmingham South Physics Network, hosted at University of Birmingham School, is excited to launch the second of our termly Physics Network sessions on Tuesday 24 February focusing on ‘Teaching Electromagnetism Practically.’ Our Physics Network events are designed to support physics specialists, science teachers, PGCE/ECT physicists, and technicians in the delivery of physics across the secondary key stages. In the past, sessions have focussed on teaching best practice, current educational research, how to effectively teach maths skills for physics pupils, and the use of practical activities to enrich physics teaching, including relevant procedures and precautions.

Our next session on 24 February will be run by Dan Cottle (Associate Professor of Physics Education from the University of Birmingham). Dan is the programme lead for the University of Birmingham's Physics PGCE course and has 15 years of teaching experience in the West Midlands. Dan's session will feature recommendations for the effective inclusion of practicals to enrich teaching of electromagnetism, including demonstrations and explanations of select apparatus.

Electromagnetism is a complex topic that introduces new concepts towards the end of the GCSE course and practical demonstrations can support the construction of mental models that pupils can use to access relevant content in their exams.

All our sessions include some time for networking and group discussion of the session content and are collaborative in nature; we are always excited to hear from participants and take suggestions to make meaningful changes to our own teaching.

Our sessions are free to attend and open to all teachers of Physics, including physics specialists, science teachers that teach physics content, established teachers, ECTs, PGCE students, and technicians.

What is the Birmingham South Physics Network?

The Birmingham South Physics Network, hosted at University of Birmingham School, is aimed at professionals teaching Physics in secondary schools (specialist & non-specialist) or those supporting the teaching of Physics (technicians, ITT providers). We are a supportive community offering training opportunities for people at all stages of their career, and enabling practitioners to meet with each other and share ideas.
