Canal & River Trust West Midlands would like to invite you to take part in a walk to celebrate Black History Month.
Join us on a guided walk along the canals and through Brindleyplace as we uncover the rich African history that has shaped the city. Led by experienced community historians from Black Heritage Walks Network, the walk will highlight hidden narratives, celebrate Black pioneers, and connect past struggles and triumphs to Birmingham today. This is a unique chance to see familiar places in a new light — through the lens of Black heritage, culture, and pride.
The walk will be led by local historians and will cover approximately 5km (3 miles).
Info: What is the Black Heritage Network?
The Black Heritage Walks Network was set up in 2018 to highlight the achievements of the African Caribbean community in the UK. In particular, they wanted to capture the stories and history of the Windrush generation in Handsworth to mark the 70th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush carrying passengers from the Caribbean. Black Heritage Walks Network has researched and created a series of black heritage trails across the West Midlands. We aim to document migration stories and achievements of the black community in the UK, in particular, the post-war African Caribbean community. This enables us to inform and educate local communities about the contribution of the black community within the UK.
