PNEU
Anyone who hasn’t seen a banana disguise kick you in the face with a savate, taken wood shavings in the eye, or had a scraper handle kicked in the gut, has never experienced a PNEU concert. The French duet from Tours, formed in 2006, has literally turned rock upside down, mocked its seriousness, mocked its mannerisms, and sublimated its energy in 3 albums and a handful of splits. Above all, PNEU have put a smile on their faces and given hundreds of concerts from the USA to Japan.
Hyperactive and prolix, the two bandmates (Jean Baptiste Geoffroy and Jérôme Vassereau) are involved in a host of projects, each more adventurous than the last (Tachycardie, Franky Goes to Pointe à Pitre, Gamut, Institutrice, Binidu, La Colonie de Vacances…).
It seems quite logical to call this new album, the famous “album of maturity”, “Get Old Or Die Tryin’” (a nod to 50cent, just in case).
Out with the coupé-décalé, in with the blasts beats. Gone are the sweet/salty melodies, hello electronic treatments. Powerful and energetic, this road to the Hospice is strewn with huge pressure rises, devastating riffs and a jouissive ardor that’s enough to take your breath away. What emerges is a jubilant feeling, overwhelmed by the duo’s ability to always have something under their feet. There’s always a new level to reach, and more inventiveness to keep us on our toes.
From the instantaneous “Mort aux chats” and “Intelligence supérieure” to the hypnotic “Getting Old”, PNEU’s 4th opus is as seductive as it is disconcerting.
Basically, it’s the same house, but the new insulation has a different look. The walls are lined with a kind of protruding bitcrusher, and, at the turn of a door, you come across a strident feedback or a rhythmic pile-up.
But upstairs, there’s always the purity of a punk/hardcore drive, or even a unifying theme.
Everything you’d expect from a PNEU record, and so much more.
